Grenache Blanc, or Garnatxa Blanca as it is known in Catalonia, is enjoying renewed popularity throughout the region. Nowhere is this more evident than in the DO of Terra Alta, whose limestone soils and moderate climate produce more mineral-driven examples of this variety, with higher natural acidity and aging potential. At Celler Piñol, winemaker Juanjo Piñol practices minimal-intervention viticulture and works solely with native Catalan varieties such as Garnatxa Blanca. All fruit used in this bottling comes from the family’s Portalet vineyard, planted on limestone and calcareous clay which is the ideal environment for this heirloom variety.
