Long before Sancerre became one of the most recognizable names in French white wine, the neighboring appellation of Quincy was already famous for its Sauvignon Blanc. In fact, Quincy was the first appellation established in the Loire Valley in 1936. Today, it is far less familiar to American wine drinkers, but producers like Domaine Trotereau offer a compelling reason to rediscover it.

The Trotereau family has been making wine in Quincy for more than two centuries. Pierre Ragon took over the estate in 1973 and has spent over fifty years preserving a distinctly traditional approach to Sauvignon Blanc. Now working alongside his successor, Augustin Ponroy, Pierre continues to favor fully ripened grapes rather than the aggressively lean, grassy style that has become so common with the variety.

Quincy's sandy soils, flint, and pink limestone help produce Sauvignon Blanc with a particularly expressive personality. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts and aging in stainless steel and enamel tanks preserve the wine's natural character without introducing oak flavors.

The 2024 is wonderfully aromatic, with ripe pink grapefruit, fresh tarragon, and delicate floral notes. What makes it particularly interesting is its texture. Rather than feeling sharp or narrowly focused, it has a generous, almost succulent quality, balanced by vibrant acidity and a lingering mineral finish.

Serve it with pan-seared scallops, roast chicken with lemon and herbs, or fresh goat cheese.

If your experience with Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc begins and ends with Sancerre, this is a wine worth discovering. Quincy has its own story to tell, and Domaine Trotereau tells it beautifully.
