The Tavel appellation lies on the west side of the Rhone River across from Chateauneuf-du-Pape. However, the region only produced Rosé, in a style we call knife-and-fork because it is bigger and richer than examples from nearby Provence as indicated by the color. We already sell a lot of this wine because it fits a unique place on the dinner table. You see, Tavel is the perfect red wine for white wine drinkers, or white wine for red wine drinkers. Come in and taste and you will see what I mean.
Purchased in 1936 by the Demoulin family, the property was so run down that they did not produce their first wine until 1960. Today they stand as one of the elite estates in the region and a bargain even at regular price. The 2023 is a blend of 60% Grenache, 13% Clairette, 13% Syrah, 10% Cinsault, 3% Mourvèdre and 1% Bourboulenc. As Rosé goes this is heady stuff, with a relatively big nose of fresh cherries and strawberries, herbs de Provence and white pepper. Texturally you need to serve with food as this is not a “porch pounder” Rosé but one that is at home with grilled fish, roast chicken or even orecchiette with sausage and broccoli rabe.
