Region: Alto Adige, Italy

Grape Variety: 100% Schiava

For years Schiava is a variety that could not find an audience in the US. These are wines that are very light, but like brussels sprouts and kale, tastes have changed and now we get asked for wines made from Schiava quite regularly. Like Müller Thurgau this one is of German origin but is also found on the steep slopes of the Dolomite mountains where it has been growing since the 13th century. (It is known in Germany as Trollinger.)

This time of year I crave red wines that can take a chill and Schiava is a perfect example. You can serve this slightly cooler than cellar temperature with the nose delivering an enticing mix of fresh strawberries, lingonberry, rose petals and green tea. With the 4th right around the corner this is ideal to serve with grilled chicken thighs, pizzas or pork and pepper skewers.
