Known today as a stronghold of Tempranillo production, Ribera del Duero was rescued from obscurity in the 1970s by a group of younger winemakers who rejected the region’s culture of bulk wine production. These producers, including Torremoron, focused on varietal bottlings of Tempranillo, making use of the old vines scattered throughout the appellation to craft full-bodied wines capable of extended aging. Winemaker Fernando de la Cal seeks to preserve the varietal characteristics of these ancient vines and, in doing so, opts not to use any new oak or over-extraction in the winery. What follows is a “fresher” example of the variety, with its natural acidity on full display, while retaining all the power of this growing region.
