I used to sell a lot of the wines from this property in the 1990s and early 2000s when they were called Newlan Winery, later Koves-Newlan. At some point they became Silenus but closed in 2024 and the property was sold to Chinese inventors. . It is a modest size property in the Oak Knoll district of Napa just north of Trefethen on Hwy 29. Their vineyards lie in the cooler west side of the AVA so the wines tend to be robust but with good structure. This is showing very well now that it has a few years in bottle.

I will reiterate that Merlot made with great intention has just as much weight and complexity, often more, than Cabernet Sauvignon. Unfortunately too many growers farm it like Cabernet Sauvignon, meaning high yields. Merlot is more like Pinot Noir in the vineyard, a prima donna, and has to be cropped low. If you farm for a low yield the results are stunning, like this bottling. Here you have the classic damson plum and Luxardo cherry notes, wrapped up with cocoa powder and caramel. The tannins are still apparent but well integrated. Drink 2025-2028.
