pomegranate seeds, fresh black cherries, black rhubarb & graphite
Stéphane Sérol took over this estate in 1996 and has transformed them into one of the leaders in the region. Like many of his generation he shifted to biodynamic farming, earning certification several years ago. His commitment to the sustainability of the region even caught the eye of the Troisgros family, famous for their nearby 3 star Michelin restaurant, and they even co-own a vineyard together. This cuvée comes from the oldest vines on the property and is a statement of how powerful Gamay can become when grown on granite soils.
For those pursuing lower intervention wines these are in your wheelhouse. Besides certified biodynamic farming Stéphane also ferments using native yeast and 20-30% of this wine is made with whole clusters of grapes. This imbues the wine with a wild, rustic quality that tempers its power. Make sure to decant this wine for a few minutes and chill to cellar temperature. Once you do it offers a juicy nose of pomegranate seeds, fresh black cherries, black rhubarb and graphite. On the palate it is grippy and focused, with a bit more weight than comparable Beaujolais and darker fruit flavors. Drink in 2024-2026 with smoked chicken or grilled flank steak.
