There is a reason Château Gruaud Larose has been one of Saint-Julien's most respected estates for centuries. Founded in 1725 and classified as a Second Growth in 1855, it has built its reputation on powerful, structured Bordeaux wines capable of aging for decades. But you don't necessarily need to wait decades to appreciate what makes this estate special.
Sarget de Gruaud Larose takes its name from Baron Sarget, a former owner who built the château at the heart of the property. First produced in 1979, it was created to offer a more approachable expression of the estate's character without sacrificing its depth or personality.
The 2019 is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, blended with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The grapes come entirely from the estate's vineyards, which achieved organic and biodynamic certification with this vintage. Twenty months in French oak contribute additional structure and complexity.
In the glass, expect dark currants, blackberries and ripe cherries, followed by savory notes of sage, leather, black truffle and cocoa. This is a substantial Saint-Julien, with impressive concentration, earthy depth and polished tannins that give the wine a long, structured finish.
Decant for at least 30 minutes before serving, particularly if opening it young. Grilled ribeye, herb-crusted lamb or slow-braised short ribs would make excellent companions. Although designed to be more approachable than the château's Grand Vin, this is a Bordeaux with the structure to reward patience.
