"On the opposite end of the spectrum, we are looking at a significant surplus of California Pinot Noir thanks to growing amount acreage coming on line and only modest growth in sales. What does that mean for consumers? Consider that even the greatest Pinot producers of California would rather sell grapes at a reduced margin than not sell their fruit at all. As a result, winemakers such as Baron, who make wine from purchased fruit, are being offered higher quality material! For those of you who remember the “EZY TGR” or “Salt Flat” Pinots from our good friend John House, this is essentially their California counterpart, and a way to try great California Pinot Noir at a fraction of its usual price.

To make this wine, Baron sources fruit from several California appellations, including the Monterey and the Santa Rita Hills. There is a little more work done in the winery than in the Sauvignon Blanc- 15% stem inclusion gives this Pinot a bit more complexity and tannin structure. The wine completes malolactic conversion, reducing acidity and “sharpness,” in a mixture of stainless steel tanks and used oak barrels before bottling." - J.P.
