The indigenous Montepulciano grape is grown throughout Abruzzo, a region bordering Italy’s Adriatic coast, but achieves new heights in the province of Pescara, where the Bosco winery is located. Here, the soils are calcareous clay which naturally concentrates flavor and reduces yields. The elevation and proximity to the Adriatic coast allow for a long, stable growing season. When the Bosco family built their winery here in 1897, they used all of these features to their advantage to craft high-quality wines, eventually becoming one of the founding members of the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC.
The fruit for the winery’s flagship Montepulciano d’Abruzzo comes from pebbly and calcareous clay soils, planted roughly 1200 feet above sea level. Harvest takes place at the end of October, and after fermentation and malolactic conversion the wine is racked to large Slavonian oak barrels for 12-18 months before bottling. When you open this wine, I would suggest decanting for up to a half hour. Drink now through 2024 with grilled lamb patties, cured meats, or hard cheeses.
