There are few wineries in the world that check as many of the cool boxes for wine consumers as the Movia winery. Historically important winery? Check. Cool wine region? Check. Masters of low intervention winemaking? Check. Represented on more 3 star restaurant lists than any winery outside of Bordeaux or Burgundy? Check. Most important, this week you get a chance to experience one of their wines at almost half price.

The Movia winery is located in Goriška Brda region of Slovenia, adjacent to the Collio border of Italy. This region was part of Italy until shortly after WWII, when the Soviet Union established the border for Czechoslovakia separating the two areas. As it turns out the President of Yugoslavia, Josip Tito, was a huge fan of the Movia wines and never merged them into the state winery. After the fall of the iron curtain the winery immediately began shipping into the west, establishing themselves rightfully at the top of the eastern European wine scene.

Today the winery produces some of the most important wines in the world, that defy labels. This Sauvignon Blanc is certainly not Marlborough or like examples from the Loire Valley like Sancerre. If anything it bears some resemblance to great White Bordeaux, but with a precision and undertone of minerality that you rarely see from those bottlings. There are notes of kumquat, grapefruit, persimmon and bees wax, wrapped around a sea spray like core of minerality. The palate is bone dry and substantial for Sauvignon Blanc, with a long finish kissed with dried herbs. Drink 2025-2030 with grilled fish, oysters or pork cutlets fried with lemon.
