Closer to the Tuscan coast is the region of Maremma, known for its red wines. Within this region is the DOCG of Morellino di Scansano, which produces a unique clone of Sangiovese called “Morellino,” or “Little Cherries,” for its pale red color. Although not recognized as a DOCG until 2007, the region has a long history with Sangiovese, bolstered by the mild climate and sandy clay soils. The Moris family have been producing wine in Tuscany for over 300 years, and this bottling comes from their large single vineyard Poggio la Mozza.
This wine is predominantly Sangiovese, as required by law, with small amounts of Merlot and Syrah blended in for structure and complexity. When you open this wine, you will want to decant for up to half an hour and do not be afraid to chill it down to cellar temperature- around 55-60 degrees Fahrenheit. Once this wine has some time to open up it delivers notes of pink cherry, freeze-dried strawberry, strawberry leaf, and earth. Drink now through 2027 with prosciutto-wrapped asparagus, smoked pork chops, or tortellini with marinara sauce.
