Montesco Pinot Noir Punta Negra 2021
Availability: | In stock |
Region: Mendoza, Argentina
Grape Variety: Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir is a tricky variety to grow in Mendoza. Despite the region’s natural elevation and the fact that snow-capped mountains can be seen in all directions, the average daytime temperature and relentless sunlight make it difficult to cultivate Pinot Noir without risking over-ripeness or worse, sun-dried grapes on the vine. However, in a sub-region of the Valle de Uco, a whopping 4800 feet above sea level, there are a few brave growers producing Pinot Noir in a cooler climate than most. The Punta Negra vineyard is small, only 2 hectares planted in 2009. The fruit quality and terroir more than make up for the vineyard’s small size.
To make this wine, all fruit is harvested by hand, a necessity at such high elevations. The fruit ferments on native yeasts and, once dry, is racked to a single 83-year-old oak foudre for 18 months before bottling. When you open this wine, you will want to serve it around cellar temperature, around 55 degrees Fahrenheit, and decanting for up to half an hour is recommended. Once this wine has some time to open up it delivers notes of dried raspberry, tart red cherry, red currant, and tomato leaf. Drink 2025-2028 with grilled salmon, fresh mozzarella and crackers, or lamb patties.
