Grape Variety: Cabernet Franc

Like Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc can be difficult to get right in Mendoza. However, the alluvial and calcareous clay soils of the Valle de Uco work in its favor, and in San Pablo, where our first feature comes from, growers are embracing this variety as well. The vineyard sits at such high altitudes that vineyard pests are a rare sight, and as such the Cabernet Franc grown here is grown on original French root stock, hence the vineyard name “Piefranc,” or “French footed.” The French rootstock, alluvial soils, and cooler climate are reminiscent of France’s Loire Valley, and when you taste this wine you will see the similarities for yourself.

To make this wine, all fruit is harvested by hand and, once dry, sees 8 months of maturation in concrete tanks. Matias prefers to use concrete to preserve the freshness and natural acidity of Cabernet Franc. When you open this wine, I would recommend chilling it down to cellar temperature as well, and it will likewise benefit from at least half an hour of decanting. Once this wine has some time to open up it delivers notes of fresh blackberry, wild blueberry, plum leaf, and wet earth. Drink 2025-2030 with grilled flank steak, lamb chops, or chicken with stewed vegetables.
