Grape Variety: 100% Müller Thurgau

Despite the German sounding name this wine actually comes from Italy, and is made from a grape created in Switzerland in the 1882. Back then Dr. Müller, who worked at the famed Geisenheim Grape Breeding Institute was trying to create a grape variety that would give the character of Riesling but more adaptable and higher yielding. The result is Müller Thurgau which at the time was believed to be a crossing of Riesling and Silvaner. Thanks to DNA research we now know that is not accurate and it is actually a crossing of Riesling and Madeleine Royale. Regardless of who the parents are, today the variety is known for producing aromatic, light white wines that are low in acidity and very quaffable.

This version comes from the Simoni family who we introduced last month with their lovely Pinot Grigio. The Müller Thurgau is really a stunning white for anyone looking to break out of a rut, because it is dry, aromatic and yet not sharp or aggressive. This version sports aromas of early summer peaches, Bosc pears, white cardamom, ginger and of course a little sea salt from the limestone soils.
