sea shell, lemon zest, fresh green melon, persimmon and pineapple

Our selection this week, Masua, is from the Alava/Arabako sub-zone, located farther inland than the more common Getariako Txakoli. With a low mountain range providing a little shelter from the cold Atlantic Ocean winds, the wines tend to be a bit fuller and less austere than their neighbors to the north. This bottling is produced using the classic grape of the region, Hondarrabi Zuri as well as 20% Petit Corbu, which is more common in the Basque country on the French side of the border.

Give this wine a good chill before serving. Pour this wine and don’t be surprised by a tiny spritz, as like many Txakoli it was bottled young without racking so a little CO2 remains. The nose is a piercing combination of sea shell, lemon zest, fresh green melon, persimmon and pineapple. On the palate it is light and dry, with a little roundness from a couple of months of lees contact. Serve this wine with Vietnamese summer rolls or cold shrimp drizzled with olive oil, lemon zest and sea salt over a bed of endive.
