In the decades following phylloxera and two World Wars, many of Campania’s historic vineyards and native grape varieties were in danger of disappearing. While other winemakers began to look elsewhere, the Mastroberardino family doubled down on the grapes that had defined their region for centuries. They became champions of Aglianico, Fiano, Greco and Falanghina and helped spearhead the charge to preserve those classic Campanian wines. Ten generations later, that commitment is still evident in this bottle. The 2024 Falanghina comes from the family’s Apice estate in Sannio, where the combination of elevation and well-drained soils help preserve the freshness that makes this grape so appealing. Fermentation takes place entirely in temperature-controlled stainless steel. White flowers and citrus lead into ripe peach and tropical fruit, but there is plenty of bright acidity to keep the wine lively through its persistent finish. If Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc are your usual warm-weather whites, Falanghina offers a delicious change of scenery. Serve it chilled with grilled fish, shrimp scampi or your favorite light salad.
