Kermit discovered this estate many years ago when having lunch in the town of Monferrato, on his way to meet a different winemaker. As the story goes he ordered a pitcher of the house white, an Arneis sold by the pitcher. Kermit was so impressed that he asked the restauranteur who provides the wine. After meeting Kermit, they began bottling a blend from the cellar, a red wine that was sold for years as Kermit Lynch Monferrato Rosso. Then a couple of years ago they began using the name of the domaine, Tenuta La Pergola.

I first discovered this wine with the 2010 vintage, the second bottling, and for years I used this as my “house” wine for spaghetti and meatballs, pizza, and just about anything that involved red sauce. The past two or three vintages have been particularly good, and now I serve it with even more serious dishes. The blend is typically about half Barbera de Monferrato, with the balance being Dolcetto, Bonarda, Freisa and Croatina. - Tim
