A few weeks ago, I was listening to the excellent podcast Cork Talk with Tim Atkin, MW, where he interviewed Núria Altés from the Terra Alta region of Spain. I had "met" Núria during a virtual tasting of her wines years ago, and it reminded me of my impression of their quality. Inspired by those memories, I requested samples, and true to my recollection, they are outstanding. Since founding her winery in 2010, Núria and her husband, Rafael De Haan, have practiced biodynamic principles and a minimal-intervention approach in the cellar. The wines exemplify Garnatxa (Grenache for the Francophiles) with a finesse rarely found in this varietal.
To fully appreciate this wine, be sure to decant it for a few minutes and chill it to cellar temperature. The aroma reveals a subtle blend of fresh raspberry, black raspberry, dried orange peel, Orange Pekoe tea leaves, and a hint of graphite. Where Núria's talent truly shines is on the palate; instead of being stewy and dense like many Grenaches, this one remains vibrant and fresh, with a gentle dusting of tannins on the finish. Enjoy this wine with smoked pork ribs (dry rub, no BBQ sauce), grilled salmon, or, if you're feeling adventurous this 4th of July, a delicious paella!
