The three geese on the label aren't just a clever design. They represent three generations of the Monson family, whose farming history in Washington's Columbia Valley stretches back more than a century.
The story begins in the early 1900s, when M.L. Monson settled in the Yakima Valley to build a farming business. The family initially raised cattle and grew fruit, but the next generation saw another possibility for the region's dry, sun-drenched hillsides: wine grapes.
After consulting with Dr. Walter Clore, widely regarded as the father of Washington wine, Arvid Monson began establishing vineyards in what would eventually become Goose Ridge Estate. Today, the family's vineyards occupy a remarkable stretch of land in Goose Gap, between Red Mountain and the Horse Heaven Hills.
The g3 Merlot is a particularly good introduction to why Washington has become such an important region for this grape. The Columbia Valley's sunny growing season helps Merlot develop generous fruit flavors, while its cool nights preserve the acidity that keeps the wine balanced.
Made from estate-grown grapes, the wine is aged in oak barrels to soften its texture and develop complexity. A small addition of Cabernet Sauvignon provides additional structure without overshadowing Merlot's naturally generous character.
In the glass, expect aromas of black cherry, ripe plum, blueberry, and a touch of toasted spice. The palate is rich and velvety, with juicy dark fruit, rounded tannins, and a lingering finish that retains a welcome sense of freshness.
This is a satisfying Merlot for anyone who appreciates generous fruit without excessive heaviness. Try it with grilled burgers, rosemary-roasted pork tenderloin, or braised short ribs over creamy mashed potatoes.
