What if you could enjoy a Bordeaux made with the expertise of one of the Médoc's most celebrated wine families without paying the price of a classified growth?

That is part of the appeal of Château Fort-Lignac.

The estate belongs to the Borie family, best known for Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, the prestigious Second Growth in Saint-Julien. Jean-Eugène Borie acquired this small property in the Haut-Médoc, just south of Saint-Julien, with the ambition of producing a serious, traditionally styled Bordeaux at a more approachable price.

The connection is more than a famous family name. Fort-Lignac benefits from the winemaking expertise associated with Ducru-Beaucaillou, bringing a thoughtful approach to a wine intended for everyday enjoyment rather than decades in a cellar.

Cabernet Sauvignon provides the backbone, delivering the dark fruit, structure, and savory character that define the Left Bank. Merlot contributes roundness and softness, while oak aging adds complexity.

The 2017 vintage offers aromas of blackcurrant, ripe cherry, and blackberry, followed by notes of cedar, tobacco, and a touch of licorice. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and nicely balanced, with fine tannins, refreshing acidity, and a savory finish that becomes more expressive as the wine opens.

At this stage in its life, the wine has had time to develop some of the secondary characteristics that make mature Bordeaux so appealing. The fruit remains present, but it is increasingly joined by earthy, herbal, and gently smoky notes.

Serve at approximately 60–65°F, allowing the wine a little time in the glass to open. It is particularly enjoyable alongside grilled ribeye, rosemary-roasted lamb, or beef tenderloin with sautéed mushrooms.

For those curious about what makes traditional Left Bank Bordeaux so enduringly popular, Fort-Lignac offers an inviting introduction, with a family connection that makes the story even more interesting.
