"Blaufrankisch, known in Germany as Lemberger, is a red variety that thrives in sunny, mountainous climates. Throughout eastern Austria, this variety is widely planted and used to create red wines of power and natural acidity. In Weinland, a growing region located on the outskirts of Vienna, many examples of this variety are made in an easier-drinking style, befitting the local wine quaffing culture. The Evolucio Blaufrankisch is one such example.
Similar to the Furmint, several winegrowers in the region work under contract to produce this example of Blaufrankisch. Unusually for an Austrian red, however, some fruit from a neighboring region is blended in- in this case, the Burgenland region, where the Blaufrankisch grape typically exhibits more ripeness and tannin. Although not mentioned on the label, all of the vineyards used have been biodynamically certified. Once brought to the winery, this wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel. After a 10-day maceration on the skins, the wine is racked to neutral oak barrels for a year before bottling." - JP Donnelly Davis
