Merseguera is not a grape that many have heard of, but this native Spanish grape is what makes La Tremenda Blanco so interesting. Enrique Mendoza blends it equally with Sauvignon Blanc, using Merseguera’s naturally bright acidity to balance Sauvignon Blanc’s more aromatic personality. The grapes come from 30-to 40-year old vines grown around 1,800 feet at the Finca Chaconero vineyard in Alicante, where they are harvested by hand and fermented separately at cool temperatures in stainless steel to preserve freshness. Sauvignon Blanc brings citrus and tropical fruit, while Merseguera keeps the wine crisp and energetic. It’s a refreshing introduction to an obscure grape that you may not know, and a great example of why Spain’s native varieties are worth exploring.
