Over the past couple of years we have become big fans of this small family winery in the Piedmont region of Italy. Like most the family produces amazing Barolo and Barbaresco, but we find their most exciting wines are their other offerings. Many of you have enjoyed their incredible Piedmont Rosso, but we believe the wine of the summer will be the new release of their stunning Gavi di Gavi.

The white wines of the small commune of Gavi come in and out of style and currently are enjoying a moment. Here the Cortese grape is grown in soils that are mix of limestone and sandstone, evidence of the tropical inland sea that covered present day Europe. The mix of soils give the wines layers of complexity and a racy quality that is similar in may ways to good Chablis.

When you pour a glass of this wine you are immediately greeted with notes of lemon blossom, Fuji apple, white cardamom and sea spray. Where Gavi shines is the texture, where there is some richness before the mineral/chalkiness kicks in and dusts the finish. We call this a fins and feathers wine because it works with just about any seafood or chicken dish you can come up with, from formal dinner party to backyard grilling.
