Region: Abruzzo, Italy

Grape Variety: 100% Pecorino

Ever since Eric Assimov’s article in the New York Times about the high quality wines emerging from the Abruzzo region of Italy this category has been on fire. He particularly spotlighted wines made from Pecorino, a native variety that has been rediscovered and is now responsible for some of the most thrilling wines being made in Italy. Most examples are $30 a bottle or more, but we have found an excellent bottling that delivers for an amazing price.

Located in the high-altitude province of Pescara in Italy’s Abruzzo region, the Bosco family have been producing wines for over a century. Though predominantly known for their red wines made from Montepulciano, the wine that stood out the most to us is their Pecorino, which we featured to great effect in the August 2022 Explorers Club. Pecorino is a white variety only grown on the steep hillsides of the Adriatic coast, which made plantings incredibly scarce until recently. This bottling is an excellent way to sample one of Italy’s oldest grape varieties and discover just how versatile Pecorino can be when it comes to food pairings!

To maximize the fruit-forward characteristics of Pecorino, this wine is fermented exclusively in stainless steel. Temperature control is used to block malolactic conversion, which results in a leaner, more citrus-driven wine with plenty of natural acidity. On the palate, this wine is concentrated and mineral-driven with notes of candied lemon peel, key lime, fresh Gala apple, and Asian pear. Drink now through 2024 with grilled shrimp with lemon, baked goat cheese, or the Umami Bomb spaghetti with shiitake mushrooms featured in our August newsletter!
