Region: Bandol, France
Grape Varieties: 95% Mourvèdre & 5% Grenache
A couple of weeks ago we featured the Bandol Rosé for a summer feature, their red wine has now arrived for the fall! This is classic, chewy Bandol produced from the steep terraced hillsides of the Plan de Castellet, one of the cru sites for the region. It is a blend of 95% Mourvèdre and 5% Grenache from very old vines, which are farmed organically. Owner/winemaker Céline Pascale then ages the wine in large, old foudre for almost 2 years before release.
Decant this wine for a half hour before serving and give it a slight chill and the nose explodes with notes of dried red cherries, lavender, dried figs, rosemary and dried thyme. Drinking this wine you may want to give it a little chew as it is dense and muscular, with deep veins of dark berry fruits and herbs lifted by subtle minerality. Drink 2024-2030 with grilled lamb chops or swordfish with olive tapenade.
