Few people have done more to introduce Americans to the wines of Bordeaux than Alexis Lichine. A Russian-born wine merchant, author and tireless advocate for French wine, Lichine purchased Château Prieuré-Lichine in 1951, when the historic Fourth Growth estate was badly in need of restoration. He spent the following decades rebuilding its vineyards and reputation, helping return this Margaux property to the prominence it had enjoyed since the Classification of 1855.

Confidences de Prieuré-Lichine is the estate's second wine, offering a more approachable expression of the same celebrated terroir. The 2016 is a blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from younger vines planted in the gravelly soils of Margaux. Aging in previously used French oak barrels allows the fruit to remain front and center without being overwhelmed by new oak.

The 2016 vintage was particularly successful in Bordeaux, and this wine shows why. Aromas of ripe raspberry, red currant and dark plum mingle with hints of black tea, tobacco and subtle spice. On the palate, the Merlot provides a supple, generous texture, while Cabernet Sauvignon contributes freshness and structure. The tannins are polished, and the finish is long, with an appealing balance of fruit and savory complexity.

Now with a decade of age, this is an excellent opportunity to enjoy a mature Margaux without waiting years for a classified-growth Grand Vin to develop. Serve with herb-crusted rack of lamb, roast duck or beef tenderloin with mushrooms.
