I am blessed to have visited the stunning property of Clos St. Magdeleine, which is perched on an outcrop of limestone high above the azure blue Mediterranean. The Sack family has been producing wine here for four generations, with Jonathan Sack running the estate since 2008. Along with their stunning holdings in the village of Cassis, they also produce a small amount of wine from holdings in Ceyreste, the highest elevation area on the coast of Provence. Planted on north-facing slopes to counter the effects of climate change, Jonathan is championing the cause of the Vermentino grape at this site. Vermentino is not allowed in Cassis but has become a popular variety in Provence due to the complex, aromatic, and textured wines it produces.

The blend of this wine changes a bit each year, but in 2024 it is composed of 45% Vermentino, 45% Ugni Blanc, and 10% Clairette. The nose is an entrancing combination of fresh lemon zest, Fuji apple, Anjou pear, and candied ginger. There is a plump, almost rich sense of tropical fruits on the palate that are pulled tight by vibrant acidity and minerality that frame the finish. Drink with linguine with clam sauce or grilled octopus, a specialty of this region.
