In 1896, a Frenchman named Carlos Serres established a winery in Haro, the historic heart of Rioja Alta. At a time when Bordeaux was struggling with the devastation of phylloxera, French wine merchants and winemakers were discovering the remarkable potential of Spain's Rioja region. Serres became part of that movement, helping establish the international reputation of wines that combined Spanish grapes with French-inspired winemaking techniques.
More than 125 years later, the winery still produces the kind of traditional Rioja that made the region famous.
The 2019 Reserva comes from Finca El Estanque, the estate's 60-hectare vineyard near Haro, where Tempranillo and Graciano grow in the cooler, Atlantic-influenced climate of Rioja Alta. The blend is 90% Tempranillo, providing generous fruit and structure, with 10% Graciano contributing acidity, aromatic complexity, and freshness.
After fermentation in concrete vats, the wine spends 24 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels, followed by at least another year in bottle. That extended aging is central to the character of a traditional Rioja Reserva, allowing the fruit, tannins, and oak to develop into something more harmonious.
The result is a beautifully mature red with aromas of black cherry, cooked plum, cedar, and warm baking spices. Subtle notes of toffee and balsamic herbs add complexity, while the palate is silky and composed, with fine tannins and enough acidity to keep the wine lively through its long finish.
Serve it with herb-roasted lamb, grilled ribeye, or slow-braised short ribs.
For anyone who enjoys the elegance of aged Bordeaux but wants to explore something distinctly Spanish, this is an excellent place to start. It offers the savory complexity and refinement that make traditional Rioja so memorable, without demanding years of additional cellaring.
