When John Alban told a fellow grape grower that he wanted to make world-class Grenache in California, his friend thought it was one of the silliest ideas he'd ever heard.

At the time, Grenache was hardly considered a prestigious variety in California. It was more often associated with inexpensive blends than serious, age-worthy wines. But Alban had other ideas. After apprenticing with Jacques Reynaud at the legendary Château Rayas in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, he became determined to show what Grenache could accomplish on California's Central Coast.

Alban Vineyards, established in the Edna Valley in 1989, became one of the pioneering estates dedicated to Rhône varieties in California. Although Alban's Viognier and Syrah helped establish his reputation, Grenache has remained something of a personal obsession.

The 2021 Estate Grenache is composed of 95% Grenache and 5% Syrah. The estate's maritime-influenced climate allows the grapes to develop generous concentration while maintaining the freshness and structure needed to balance such a powerful wine.

The result is a Grenache that challenges expectations. Aromas of blackberry, blueberry, and ripe raspberry mingle with lavender, violet, and cracked pepper. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, with layers of dark fruit, savory herbs, and spice. Ripe tannins provide structure, while well-integrated acidity carries the wine through a long, focused finish.

Despite its immediate appeal, this is a wine with considerable aging potential. Give it an hour in a decanter if opening it young, and serve alongside rosemary-crusted lamb, grilled ribeye, or slow-braised beef short ribs.

For anyone who thinks Grenache is simply a soft, easygoing red, John Alban has spent more than three decades proving otherwise.
