"For several years most of the Portuguese red wines we were presented came from the Douro valley, from Port producers adjusting to current consumer tastes and producing table wines. Most were very good, but like their fortified wine siblings they were very powerful. Then a couple of years ago we started to see wines from the Dão region, which is farther inland and cooler. This is where Alvaro Castro and his family have produced wine for generations. To make this wine Alvaro makes a field blend, meaning all the grapes picked at the same time, a mix of Touriga Nacional, Jaen, Tinta Roriz, and Alfrocheiro. The vines grow in a deep bed of sandy, decomposed granite so again the minerality comes out of the wine in spades." - Tim
