Gonnet Notre Ami 2019
Cooked red cherries, blackberries, dried black figs, black licorice, soy sauce and dried orange peel!
When I met Guillaume in 1993 it was visiting his family winery, Font du Michelle, in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with importer Bobby Kacher. Many years later one of Bobby’s protege, Craig Baker, visited Guillaume to see if he would sell him wine for his new, eponymous import company. From there they formed a strong bond, and after that no tasting with Craig was complete without an extensive tasting of Guillaume’s wines. When Craig suddenly past last winter we were all shaken, and Guillaume found the perfect way to honor his memory. This wine is a very unusual blend of different appellations in the Southern Rhône Valley that Guillaume, and his wife Kelly, selected because they were Craig’s favorites.
This bottling is a blend of finished wines that Craig had selected from far flung appellations, from Cairanne and Rasteau to some of the oldest blocks of their Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Being from the exceptional 2019 vintage this wine has superior concentration, but also shows very good structure and tension on the palate.
